Throughout our lives, there are times when we look back after having gone through them, that seem a little blurry. We usually call these times storms, valleys, rough times, or tough times. It is those times in which nothing makes sense, and just when you thought that God was in the middle of it, it seemed He was nowhere to be found! As Matthew 14:24 (KJV) says, “But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary (hostile).” The ship represents each of our lives, and the sea is this world we live in. So many times we, just like the disciples, obey Jesus, but then end up in the middle of the hostile storm of life. We are also like the disciples searching for Jesus, thinking He’s nowhere around and can’t understand why!

I’ve come to learn that in life there are two types of storms: correcting storms and perfecting storms. Many times, God allows a correcting storm to blow through our lives because we try to do things on our own and reason things out. We trust in our own abilities, but we must realize that God’s ways are not our ways, and God’s thoughts are not our thoughts. (Isa. 55:8) God allows our lives to get a little blurry so that he can correct us and put us back on the right path. What good would it be to run a race on the wrong track? A good Father will always correct his child.

When Jonah disobeyed God and decided to try to do things his own way, God put a “whale of a storm” in his life that blew him off course; he ultimately got through the storm and steered to his destiny.

The second storm that blurs life is a perfecting storm. Many times there are big and little obstacles that prevent us from doing all that we can for God. He allows those storms to blow through at certain times in our lives so that we can develop character and perseverance.

During these storms our lives are tried in the fire. We are stretched to become all that God has purposed for our lives. (Jer. 29:11) So next time life seems to get a little blurry, the best thing to do is to stop and ask God, “what can I learn from this storm?” Is He trying to correct you or perfect you? Just know that even if you can’t see Him, remember His promise, “I will never leave you, nor forsake you.” (Heb. 13:5)
